Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Widnes to Llandudno (34)
2995 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 193. Fri 29th Nov 2013 - Birkenhead to Neston, 21 miles (2995 miles walked)

Mersey Ferry terminal at Seacombe, Birkenhead
After 3 nights in the one place I had to move the camper on this morning so it meant an early start and I was driving by 06.15.

I drove to where I would be finishing today's walk at Neston and got the train to Birkenhead and I was walking at 09.00.

It was raining when I got off the train and it came on heavy for a while.

The "Black Pearl", New Brighton
There was no road walking today as there was a cycleway all round the Wirral Peninsula from Birkenhead to Neston.

Coming into New Brighton the rain had stopped and the sun put in a brief appearance, for the only time in the day, but the wind had picked up to gale force and initially I was walking right into it.

I came across this great piece of driftwood art, the flag proclaiming it was the "Black Pearl".

The coastline from New Brighton
.The headland turned west at New Brighton which put the worst of the wind on my side but it was still hard work walking in it.

At one point I had to walk through a sand storm where the dry sand was being whipped up over the prom wall.

A Skylark
A Skylark was struggling to get anywhere in the wind and just sat in the grass as I walked by it, I couldn't hold the camera steady with the wind either.

Pirate ship at Hoylake
Just like the last day it was very windy there was a lone kite surfer out on the waves.

I had 2 hours walking in this direction to Hoylake, where I came across another Pirate Ship, before thankfully turning southeast to put the wind behind me.

Wind Surfers at West Kirby
The water in the Marine Lake at West Kirby was much calmer than the sea but the wind still proved testing for the wind surfers.

The cycleway from West Kirby to Neston
The walk had so far been mainly along a promenade but from West Kirby it came inland a bit and was along the old railway right into Neston.

I got to camper in the town centre car park at 15.45 and the 21 miles had been quite tiring because of the wind.

I'm staying in the car park tonight and having an easy day tomorrow just to get into Wales and clock up the 3000 miles.
